Troubleshoot microphone issues on Bookem video calls

If the other person can't hear you during a Bookem video call, likely causes include browser permissions, operating system settings, the wrong microphone selected, or another app using the microphone. Follow these steps to identify the issue.

Check browser permissions

Your browser needs explicit permission to use your microphone.

  1. Go to Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Permissions
OR Click the icon to the left of the address bar (a lock or camera icon, depending on your browser)
  2. Find the Microphone permission in the list
  3. Locate https://www.bookem.com and set it to Allow
  4. Refresh the page and rejoin the Bookem call

Note: if you've never been asked for microphone access, your browser may show a permission prompt automatically when you join a call. Choose Allow when this appears.

Check device permissions

Mac or apple devices

Your browser can have permission to use your microphone while macOS still blocks it at the system level.

  • Open System Settings
  • Go to Privacy & Security > Microphone
  • Find your browser in the list and turn on the toggle next to it
  • If you just turned it on, quit Chrome fully and reopen it before rejoining the call

Note: if your browser doesn't appear in the list at all, it usually means macOS hasn't yet prompted for microphone access. Rejoin the Bookem call, and when the permission prompt appears, choose Allow.

Windows devices

Your browser can have permission to use your microphone while Windows still blocks it at the system level.

  • Open Windows Settings
  • Go to Privacy & security > Microphone
  • Turn on "Let apps access your microphone"
  • Scroll to the app list below and confirm that your browser is listed and allowed

Check which microphone is selected in the call

Your operating system may show a different default microphone than the one selected inside your Bookem call. This matters if you're using a headset or external microphone rather than your device's built-in one.

  1. Join or open the video call in Bookem
  2. Open the microphone dropdown inside the call screen itself, not your browser or system settings
  3. Select your headset or microphone from the list

Note: your device list may show a built-in option such as "Microphone Array" as the default. If you have an external mic connected, check this dropdown even if your browser and system settings look correct.

Close other apps using the microphone

Some operating systems won't release the microphone to a new app if another program is holding on to it.

  1. Close Teams, Zoom, or any other call software that's open or was recently used.
  2. Rejoin the Bookem call and check if the microphone now works.

Check for a hardware mute switch

Some laptops have a physical mute key or switch separate from any software setting. Check for this if the steps above haven't resolved the issue.

Test outside Bookem

If your microphone still isn't working after trying the above, test it independently to confirm whether the issue is with Bookem or with your device and drivers.

  1. Go to onlinemictest.com.
  2. Speak into your microphone and check if the site picks up sound.

If the test fails here too, the issue is outside of Bookem and points to a system or driver problem rather than a Bookem setting.
